About the Role

Royal North Shore Hospital Emergency Department is a busy tertiary service seeing 90,000 adult and paediatric patients annually and serving as a trauma centre and a state-wide burns and spinal referral hospital. Post Graduate Fellows have the opportunity to participate in a variety of models of care including short stay and fast track as well as take part in extensive teaching and research activities. The department has one of the largest and most successful Emergency Medicine training programs in NSW.

Purpose of the Position

The post graduate fellow does not fulfil the same duties as a specialist, it is a transition position between fellow medical practitioners into specialist roles via a short period of supervision. The post graduate fellow does not exercise independent clinical privileges and is supervised by a specialist medical officer at all times including periods of on-call. The level of supervision is commensurate to their level of experience.

You will provide care and treatment of patients, as a delegate of the specialist medical officer involved in the management of the patient, as part of a multidisciplinary team in a Northern Sydney Local Health District facility or service. This care will be provided within the scope of clinical practice endorsed by the NSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee.

The position will provide clinical consultation services within NSLHD and will contribute to the teaching and training of medical students, graduates and other health care professionals and also to research, evaluation and quality improvement activities within NSLHD.

Selection Criteria

• MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. The paediatric team attends all high-risk deliveries and provides neonatal resuscitation, stabilisation, and ongoing care for infants born 32 weeks' gestation or 1500 g, as well as initial resuscitation and stabilisation for infants born unexpectedly below these thresholds prior to NETS retrieval. Our Special Care Nursery provides short-term CPAP, phototherapy, glucose stabilisation, sepsis management, feeding and growth support, temperature regulation, and transition care for infants returning from tertiary units. Neonatal care consistently represents more than half of our inpatient workload, making it a central and defining component of the paediatrician role. The service maintains close partnership with NETS and John Hunter Children's Hospital, . Candidates with combined general paediatrics and neonatal skills or interest are strongly encouraged to apply and will be instrumental in shaping the neonatal service development.

• A primary medical degree registrable with AHPRA and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP - General Paediatrics), and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
• Evidence of being a medical expert, demonstrated by recent and comprehensive experience in General Paediatrics.
• Evidence of being a scholar, maintains medical professional development and has the ability to assist other staff, including trainees in the acquisition and development of knowledge.
• Evidence of being a skilled communicator, including both oral and written skills, communicating with patients, students, other health professionals and the public.
• Evidence of being a collaborator, including the ability to network and operate within an interdisciplinary framework and to work with other stakeholders in a variety of settings.
• Evidence of being a manager, including ability to be flexible and cope with a changing health system, past leadership and management experience and previous safety and quality improvement activities.
