The Opportunity

The Mental Health Clinician will be a key clinical support within the Hospital in the Home (HITH) program as part of a rotating roster. This position is central to delivering comprehensive care, evidence informed care within the HITH model.

HITH is an acute service providing early intervention to young people with severe and complex mental illness within the home environment.

Operating seven days a week, the multidisciplinary HITH team delivers accessible, collaborative, and coordinated mental health care to young people aged 12 to 25 years and their families/carers across Melbourne's northwest and western suburbs.

Our service is made up of compassionate, curious, and dedicated professionals. About the Role

Mental Health Clinicians deliver acute mental health care to young people in their own homes, whilst offering psychoeducation and support to families who are from a broad range of culturally and linguistically diverse communities and socio-economic backgrounds.

You will demonstrate high standards of clinical care that are responsive to each young person's developmental stage and presenting issues, and informed by existing evidence and guidelines.

The role offers you opportunities for providing key discipline specific individual, family and systems interventions aimed to support and facilitate recovery and well being.

We deliver individually formulated care plans that comprise of psychopharmacology, therapeutic interventions (CBT plus other targeted interventions), family inclusive practices, vocational and educational support, intensive outreach, and crisis support.

What You'll Do

• Complete mental health assessments, including formulation of care plans, crisis management plans, outcome measures, progress notes, discharge summaries, and all other required documentation.
• Undertake mental health interventions, crisis response, and family and systems based work within the client and carer's context.
• Ensure care is guided by evidence based, culturally safe, and trauma-informed principles that incorporate the diverse needs of young people, their families, and support systems, to facilitate recovery and promote wellbeing.
• Demonstrate the capacity to provide, or develop skills in, integrated assessment, treatment, and care for young people with dual diagnoses.
• Provide responsive, strengths-based, and youth-focused care and advocacy for all young people and their families, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and the LGBTQIA+ community.
• Contribute to a culture of compassionate teamwork, learning, and continuous improvement.

About You

You will be experienced in, and passionate about, providing acute, developmentally appropriate, and evidence-based mental health care to young people and their families in the community, including those requiring complex support through the Hospital in the Home program.

• Eligible disciplines: Grade 3 RPN, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker / Grade 2 Psychologist
• Relevant registration and qualifications (see position description for details)
• A minimum of 12-24 month's experience in tertiary clinical practice within the mental health field, including young people experiencing mental health disorders
• Ability to develop, implement and evaluate client centred individual service plans, risk assessments and diagnostic formulations
• Clinical experience and skills in engaging and working collaboratively with families in a mental health setting
• Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) as well as abilities in problem solving and negotiation
• Motivated by youth-focused, inclusive, and recovery-oriented care

Unit Description:

The RMH Intensive Care Unit is a recognized leader in tertiary and quaternary critical care. As one of Australia's largest and most active ICUs, our state-of-the-art 42-bed facility admits over 3,000 patients annually. As a tier 2 ECMO centre and ICU for our precinct partners (Royal Women's Hospital and the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre) we manage a diverse caseload includes major trauma, cardiac and neurosurgery, stroke, oncology, complex obstetrics, and infectious diseases. Beyond the unit, our staff lead the Medical Emergency Response team, attending more than 3,000 MET and Code Blue calls each year.

Accredited by the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) for 24 months of core training, we offer specialized exposure to cardiothoracic, neurological, and trauma intensive care.

We pride ourselves on a highly successful training program that includes five hours of protected, paid teaching time per week. Our consultant-led curriculum supports professional development at all stages, including dedicated CICM exam preparation. Our consultant group include both Primary and Second Part CICM Examiners. Trainees also have access to RMH delivered courses such as BASIC, MCEC, REACT, EMICC, and the Critical Care Echocardiography Course.

The unit is organized into four pods (A, B, C, and D), each staffed by a dedicated medical team comprising a consultant, registrar, and resident. Senior Registrars are rostered 24/7 to supervise and support general registrars. On-site Consultant cover is provided until 22:00 on weekdays and 19:00 on weekends, with on-call support available at all times.

About the role:

This role is that of a General Registrar within the Intensive Care Department, located at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, or on rotation to other Health Services (Northeast Health Wangaratta, Mercy Health, Albury Wodonga Health).

Key Responsibilities:

• Provision of high-quality care to ICU patients under the supervision of the ICU consultant, including clinical assessment, formulation of management plans, and the performance of ICU procedures under appropriate supervision.
• Supervision and mentoring of other doctors-in-training
• Participation in the medical emergency, cardiac arrest and trauma teams.
• Assessment and management of patients referred by the Emergency Department and other specialty unit within the hospital
• Facilitate safe transport of critically ill patients.
• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in both electronic and/or paper-based systems
• Effective teamwork within the ICU multidisciplinary team and the wider hospital

This position is designed to provide you with the high-acuity exposure and hands-on experience needed to master the complexities of intensive care. The role supports progressive skill development, enabling the registrar to meet the training requirements of CICM.

The position will commence 1st February 2027 on a Full-Time basis.

• Current General Registration with The Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA)
• Appropriate tertiary Health Qualifications - MBBS or equivalent
• Completion of 3 years training as a Hospital Medical Officer (HMO)
• Completed a minimum of 6 months prior intensive care experience
