About the opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic General Surgeon who is preparing for a future application to the Australia and New Zealand Training Board in Colon and Rectal Surgery (ANZTBCRS) for formal training to become a Colorectal Surgeon. It is a high-volume, 12-month clinical fellowship in colorectal surgery in Townsville University Hospital with abundant opportunity to also develop an academic career. The successful candidate will be encouraged to complete a Master of Philosophy by publication at James Cook University.

Townsville University Hospital is the only tertiary referral centre in North Queensland, serving patients from Cape York to Gulf of Carpentaria. It is a major teaching hospital for James Cook University's School of Medicine.

Our Colorectal Unit is an expanding and collegiate unit with two consultant surgeons, a fellow, a senior SET registrar, a non-accredited registrar, a resident and surgical interns.

Role requirements

• Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) qualifications or equivalent.
• Current registration or eligibility for registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia.
• Appointment level will be determined by qualifications and medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

Practice Information:
This is an accredited general practice medical centre serving a diverse range of patients. It is a group practice, bulk billing all patients 7 days from 7am. As well as GPs, they also have on site pharmacy, pathology collection, dentist, physio, exercise physio, dietitian, diabetic educator, podiatrist and psychologists. The practice also provides reception and nursing support for all of the hours the centre is open.

Position Description:
The General Practitioner role is to provide comprehensive medical care to individuals, families and communities (from initial consultation to follow up) on simple and complex health conditions. The General Practitioner provides a range of health services ranging from prevention of illness through to treatment and rehabilitation. The position requires consultation with other professionals internally (e.g. Nurse) and externally (e.g. specialist) as required, with coordination and ongoing care relating back to the General Practitioner. General Practitioners in this role continue to assist patients and the community by providing ongoing education, participation in health promotion, conducting research and assisting training to colleagues and other health professionals.

Qualifications & Experience:
Minimum 3 years' experience as a GP and AHPRA medical board registration or eligibility for same.
