About the Role:
An exciting opportunity is available to join the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN) as a Clinical Coder (Level 2) or Advanced Clinical Coder (Level 3) within the Health Information Management Service (HIMS) - a critical function that supports high-quality patient care, accurate data reporting, and sustainable health service delivery.

In these roles, you will be responsible for the timely and accurate translation of clinical documentation into ICD-10-AM (current edition), ensuring coded data is suitable for statistical analysis, epidemiology, hospital planning, research, and quality assurance. A key outcome of your work is the accurate assignment of Australian Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (AR-DRGs), which directly underpin Activity Based Funding (ABF) and inform organisational decision-making.
As a Clinical Coder (Level 2), you will apply your coding expertise to a broad range of clinical cases while contributing to team capability through mentoring and knowledge sharing.
As an Advanced Clinical Coder (Level 3), you will take the lead on complex and specialised cases, working closely with clinicians to clarify documentation and ensure coding accuracy at the highest level. In both roles, you will play an integral part in maintaining coding quality standards and supporting continuous improvement across the service.
You will report to the Manager Coding Services, working both independently and collaboratively within a professional and supportive team environment that values accuracy, accountability, and ongoing development.
To be eligible for this position as a Clinical Coder (Level 2) ASO4 classification, you must successful completion of a recognised HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding course in ICD-10-AM (current edition) or equivalent, together with demonstrated competency in ICD-10-AM coding; or International Transition to ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS.
To be eligible for this position as an Advanced Clinical Coder (Level 3) ASO5 classification, successful completion of the HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding Course in ICD-10-AM or equivalent, together with demonstrated advanced competency in ICD-10-AM (current edition) coding as determined by Manager.

Your skills and experience include:
- Technical Coding Expertise:
- proven ability to accurately assign ICD-10-AM codes in line with National and State Coding Standards
- strong capability to analyse, interpret, and problem-solve complex patient episodes
- experience using coding tools such as Encoder/Codefinder, eBooks, or Turbocoder
- Clinical and Systems Knowledge:
- understanding of clinical documentation, healthcare terminology, and hospital workflows
- experience in writing clear, ethical clinical documentation queries and liaising with clinicians
- proficiency in systems and reporting tools, including advanced computing skills (e.g., spreadsheets, reporting platforms such as HIP)
- Organisation, Accuracy and Performance:
- high level of attention to detail, numeracy, and analytical ability
- proven capacity to prioritise workload, meet KPIs, and deliver under pressure while maintaining data quality
- Communication and Team Contribution:
- ability to build effective working relationships with medical, nursing, and administrative staff
- strong written and verbal communication skills, with confidence in both individual and group settings
- experience working independently and collaboratively, contributing to team outcomes and mentoring others where required
- Experience and Continuous Improvement:
- minimum 12 months’ clinical coding experience in an acute or multidisciplinary setting
- participation in coding quality audits, competency evaluation, and continuous improvement activities
- commitment to ongoing professional development and maintaining contemporary coding knowledge
- a demonstrated focus on supporting safe, high-quality care aligned with National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards
